Text Box: GPL Sound Overlay

A quick guide to getting GPLSO up and running.

A number of versions of GPLSO have been produced by Maxim but the version which has become widely used in the GPL community is the GPLSObv2.

Download this version from Maxims site here. Take look at the rest of his site here.

Then download the various sound files available. Most are linked here.

The files can be stored anywhere on your PC hard drive. They do not need to be in the GPL folder.

For convenience of setting up it is best not to have them in too many subfolders away from the main drive.

Now we are ready to start the configuration process to allow GPLSO to recognise all the files and allow you to enjoy a whole new dimension in your Grand Prix Legends game. It is advisable to have a pen and paper ready to note the names of the files you will be browsing during the setup process.

The first step is the Engine Sound selection. To do this we need to open up the programme named “type b v2 sound designer.exe”

You should see a screen like this.
Click on the “Load” button and browse to the sdf file for the soundset you want to configure

In this example I am loading Jeroen’s Lotus 49 DFV file.

When it is loaded you should see the detail of the sdf file like this. This shows how the 10 separate files within the sdf are merged at different points on the rev range of the engine. There are five throttle on sounds down the left side and five throttle off sounds down the right.

At this point you could try clicking on the “rise and fall test” button. If you hear the sound the sdf file knows where the files are on your hard drive. If you do not hear sound (which is more likely) then you need to load the separate files.

To load the separate sound files click on the load button on the left of each file name and browse to the location of that file on your hard drive. It is a good practice to note the names of all of these files before you start this procedure just in case you loose track as you work through them. If you make an incorrect mouse click at any point sometimes the file name box goes blank. If in doubt at any time the best thing is to close without saving and start again! In this screenshot I’m loading the first throttle on file “dfvlot_69_idle.wav”.

Repeat this procedure for all ten sound files.

Now if you repeat the rise and fall test and you should hear the sounds play in all their glory. Try to listen carefully and watch the sound level indicator bars for each separate sound to ensure all sounds are actually playing.

If all is well click save.
